a quick personal rant:
I am TIRED oh so TIRED of
being devalued as an artist.
As an artist, we are constantly bombarded with phrases like
"It will be great for your portfolio."
"The community will benefit."
"can you just 'whip' something up"
(ermergerd…don't you HATE that?)
We work for FREE already, on a promise or dream that our investment of blood, sweat and tears, time and HIGH cost of supplies and a life time of study will hopefully be able to feed us or provide us a roof…
but we should donate to your cause because we usually rely on the butterflies and rainbows in our heads to get us through a month of bills, right?
It's time to stand up and say NO.
(say it with me kids…. "NO.")
IF we keep donating for the glory and honor of having our work hanging in a wonderful place we might actually live up to that "starving artist" thing.
by the way….we are devaluing ALL others
work along with ours when we give it away.
Non-profit agencies are one of the last bastions of economic prosperity in some areas of New England, and frankly, they are becoming an abused entity….
but that's another rift or blog for another day….
if they do not want to spend their money on the art…
they should not have it.
yes, you can donate if you want to… and YES there are some wonderful charities out there…
but consider….does it devalue your future work?
i'm just guessing that you'd like to make a
living at this someday.
If a non-profit, or business, chooses to spend on bureaucracy and office enhancements or a high pay check for themselves, instead of art, then they should not have the art….so choose your
Artists & musicians are in THE TOUGHEST position in a bad economy, and frankly, the charity circuit could definitely be more focused on how to get US PAID rather than how to use us to enhance their missions.
