We haven't touched each
other in over 4 months…
This blank canvas is
be BRILLIANT right NOW!
But nothing is happening.
ARE WE BREAKING UP?
Is our love affair over? Will it ever return?
In September, creativity stormed out on me in a bitter and angry rage, and so I went back to exploring other artists work and basking and brooding in jealous hatred of what awesomeness others are achieving with their art …
I went over to Richard DeCosta's Facebook page to check out some of his new work and throw some love his way…
only to find that he too, had broken up with his creative career…..NOOOOO!!!
If he can't make the relationship work what chance do I have?
okay, so i chatted with DeCosta, and the good news is…
Richard has since forgiven his life partner and shared these all-too familiar words with me as I try and figure out how to
forgive art for temporarily ruining my life…
"I'll get quite worked up and excited about my music for a year or two, then get frustrated to the point of despair."
Richard, I am totally picking up what you are putting down…
"not because of lack of ideas or lack of output, but for lack of positive response... I get the occasional "like" on social media and other places, but by now I should be earning a living with my music."
I'm getting that too…'likes' do not pay rent or heat…
"there are so many people broadcasting,
that there are too few left to listen. "
1000 mediocre musicians drown out 1 above average one.
So exactly HOW does one end up dating once again?
"My ego does that for me. Once I've been away from music for a while, I will listen to older music and it reminds me what Im capable of ...and I get into a "well, why not try again" mindset…
and the cycle begins all over again."

I can't tell you just HOW relieved
I am that DeCosta didn't give up,
I am expecting to see/hear/feel his BRILLIANT space opera some year coming up…
omg…just WHEN will the tide turn and artists get funding again?!! MEH.
MEANWHILE… we MUST just PAINT….
(or compose, or dance, or draw….)
and patiently wait until the ultimate rad wave comes splashing our way
I needed only to reach out to my friends to get over my hump and discover, that I indeed have my own personal exploration with inspiration that needed tending and down time…
it's OKAY to feel the occasional despair or speed bump…and as the very valuable mantra goes … "This too shall pass" …
SIGH i feel much better knowing it will come back!
Never under-estimate a community of like minded people that can remind you of how you operate as an artist and as a human, with those sometimes difficult ebbs and flows…and that you do what you do because you are AWESOME at it and by GAWD people DO love it!
For all it's pitfalls, Facebook (and other assorted social mediums), provide an amazing endless resource of communities to choose from and awesome people to talk to. If you are having an off day with your art, (or your mental health) all it takes is a phone or a lap top and a little bravery to reach out…and find out, that you are not alone!
