Ross Bachelder at Berwick Public Library
lives up to it's name, Multiple Visions.
The show features collage & mixed media, photography, painting and a visual stimuli of collected fond memories and respect for a strong history of arts, craft and culture.
Although his straight up painting skills are evident and very luxurious to look at, some of the smallest pieces of work stood out at the show, like "ENTRAPMENT" (shown above) which is only about 8" wide and shows who I can only guess is Laurie Anderson tangled in web of history and decay. The figure is enclosed by images of history…a calm scenic farm above and a revolutionary group basking in a sunset (and maybe a win) below. Although the meaning of some of the included objects is not fully clarified, the message is crystal clear that humans can get boxed in from their own history.
Ross is confident in his decision to work in whatever medium fits his mood at any given moment, making no apologies for following several paths at once, and utilizing and showing off many of the skills that he has picked up over the years.
I accidentally ignored most of his photographic images, the intriguing nature of the mixed media distracting my eye away from what I do remember as being solid images that mixed well in the overall color palette and theme, so I will have to return to have a second, and maybe third look at what I may have missed.
For those of us that are on tight household budgets, all of the work is priced wonderfully fitting for the working folks of Berwick, Maine, "Entrapment" is listed for only $50 and many pieces showing are not priced over $250. having art within reach of everyone that may want to acquire a new handmade work of art and craft is so important to the growth of the budding art scene in this area.
